Applications are being accepted through May 1 for the Clinical Hemodialysis Technician program at Mayo Clinic School of Health Sciences in Rochester, Minnesota. The 16-week program, which will begin in August, consists of classroom and online sessions. Tuition for the August cohort is $1,500.
A hemodialysis technician initiates hemodialysis treatment by inserting a needle into a patient's blood vessel or attaching the hemodialysis tubing to a catheter in the patient's chest. The hemodialysis technician monitors patient status and vital signs, obtains blood samples, and documents the care provided.
The technician also is responsible for equipment management, including programming, cleaning and monitoring the hemodialysis machines. The technician also must have an in-depth understanding of the facility's water treatment system and monitors this system as part of patient safety.
Applicants must have a high school diploma or equivalent and Basic Life Support certification.
