Unit Secretary

 Daily Tasks
Ensures that the non-direct patient care aspects of the hospital nursing unit run smoothly. Main duties include clerical and secretarial tasks such as answering phones, sending faxes, making copies, ordering and organizing supplies and filing. Other duties include scheduling tests and procedures for patients and keeping medical charts organized.
Must have a professional appearance and be polite and courteous even during busy times and interruptions. The ability to do multiple tasks at once is crucial. Must be flexible and able to function as a resource to members of the health-care team, and be familiar with the medical center and the resources available to customers.
 Work Setting
Patient care unit in the hospital.
 Work Hours
Variety of rotating day, evening, night and weekend shifts.
Must have completed the health unit coordinator training offered at various community and technical colleges.
Must demonstrate abilities in keyboarding and medical terminology.
 Recommended High School Classes
college prep, business/accounting, keyboarding, computer applications, advanced English composition, healthcare sciences, biology, math, and psychology
